Start with an overall view
Choose a square or a perspective that you like. Take the time to look at the edges of the frame: a cut-off element or a bin in the foreground sometimes draws the eye more than the intended subject.
If you are photographing Place Stanislas, try several positions without blocking the walkways. A successful image does not necessarily require standing in the middle of the flow.
Look for the details that tell of December
Look at the materials, the shop windows, the lights and the objects linked to the holidays. For the stalls, ask permission before photographing a person or a product close up.
Do not expect to find everywhere a particular decor glimpsed in an image from another year. Your stay also tells the story of the city as it appears at the time of your visit.

Try a few views while the sky still holds some colour. Steady the phone and take several shots rather than moving at the moment of the shutter.
For a portrait, choose a soft light and a spot where you can stop quietly. Avoid asking the group to pose for too long in the cold.
Keep personal memories
Also photograph the small moments: a break, a find or the favourite path of the stay. They will give meaning to the images once you are back home.
Respect the peace of the residents and the privacy of other visitors. To share identifiable portraits publicly, make sure you have the agreement of the people concerned.
